People, Pallets and Some Very Pretty Recycling

Pallets have often been a "problem item" for waste managers. They are big, bulky and sometimes require special disposal. Even wood of greater quality and value can find its way into a dumpster and bulky waste streams simply because there are few avenues for it to find new purpose.

Fresh Start Worx showcases a remedy for these materials management missteps with, surprisingly, its job training program. Members of the Connecticut Recyclers Coalition paid a visit to the very busy 20-28 Sargeant Street location in Hartford in mid-May. Office, show room, training center and workshop were all abuzz with activity. Fresh Start Worx has focused on providing very practical job skills to folks who are seeking a new path, often after a personal challenge in their lives. The participants learn woodworking skills that enable them to create beautiful chairs, tables, benches, garden items and even trash cans....often from recovered pallet wood or donated lumber. Many items are listed on the website (www.fsworx.org) and many others can be ordered or created to order by contacting Amar at amar@fsworx.org.
